PREVENTATIVE CARE

The goal of any dentist is to prevent problems before they start. Preventive dentistry is concerned with maintaining and fortifying the structures of the oral cavity – teeth, gums, and tongue -- against damage and disease. At Village Green Family Dentistry we offer patients the following Preventive Care services:

  • Adult and Child Prophylaxis - Adult and Child Prophylaxis is the cleaning of the teeth to remove plaque, calculus, and stains, and is performed as a preventive measure for the control of gingivitis. Dental prophylaxis should be done at least every six months.

  • Oral Cancer Screening - Oral cancer screening is the early examination and testing that is performed in order to make a determination of whether or not a patient may have oral cancer. It is very important, which is why it is an integral part of the preventive care we provide.

  • Fluoride Treatment - Fluoride treatment is a proven way to prevent tooth decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay, and is especially helpful in preventing cavities in children.

RESTORATIVE CARE

Restorative dentistry involves the diagnosis, treatment and repair of all issues relating to the health and function of the mouth and smile, specifically those pertaining to broken or damaged teeth. At Village Green Family Dentistry, we offer patients the following restorative care services to help restore teeth that have been compromised:

  • Restorations
Restorations, better known as fillings, use materials to restore the function and integrity of missing tooth structure.

  • Inlays and Onlays
An inlay is an indirect restoration or filling, consisting of a solid substance, either gold or porcelain, which is fitted to a space in a tooth and cemented into place. An onlay is the same as an Inlay, except that it extends to replace the cusp -- the pointed tips on the biting surfaces of the teeth. Basically, crowns are onlays that completely cover all surfaces of a tooth.

  • Laminate Veneers for Smile Design
No one should ever be reluctant to because of the appearance of his or her teeth. For those who shy away from smiling we offer laminate veneers, an aesthetic restoration of front teeth to mask discoloration, restore malformed teeth, close gaps, and correct minor tooth alignment.

WHAT IS PLAQUE?

Plaque is a sticky mix of bacteria and the substances they secrete. Bacteria produce adhesive chemicals called mucopolysaccharides. The bacteria then live in this film on teeth, called a biofilm. At first, this slimy layer is fragile and easily removed by tooth brushing. Which is wise to do, because if not removed bacteria in tooth plaque are free to release acids that damage tooth enamel. Regular acid assaults on enamel can wear holes in teeth, which are commonly called cavities.

If left unchecked, plaque buildup gradually hardens, creating tartar or calculus on your teeth. Tartar is petrified plaque, and once it’s there, you need a dentist’s help to remove it. Here’s another reason to get plaque before it becomes tartar; tartar above the gum line contributes to gingivitis, or gum disease.
